The first impression on arriving in Wolverhapton was not a good one, loads of little kids trying to be hardcore and gothic along with loads of nu-metal and hardcore fans. As a result of all these cunts we decided not to join the queue but wander off to find a McDonalds. On our travels we happened across a MVC with none other than Cradle inside shopping although they were not allowing anyone else in.
After successfully completeing our mission for food we went and joined the queue and heard endless babble about the likes of Ill Nino, Slipknot, Korn and how Grischnakh killed the Mayhem bassist WTF!?!?!
Finally the doors opened and we got to near the front of the pit where unsurprisingly there were a load of little girls who in an hours time would be screaming about getting squashed, you're at a fucking heavy metal gig bitches!!!!
The first band, Headspeed, took to the stage and were actually the worst band I have ever seen, even beating InMe's dreadful performance at Download '03. They were a truely awful, average metal/hardcore band who seemed to just play three riffs in different orders.
The second band Mendeed although not as bad as the first were also pretty crap in my opinion, unsurprisingly I was know getting bored and just wanting Cradle to appear already, and then I had a little girl trying to elbow me in the head because I was apparently squashing her, not surprisingly a nice flow of swear words and insults quickly escaped my mouth and she eventually left.
Finally Cradle hit the stage and were just damned awesome, great sound even if it was a little too loud. They started in with the brutal yet melodic 'Gilded cunt' which sounded great much better than when they played it at the Underworld last year where you couldn't really hear the guitars. Next up was 'Nemesis' which was also pretty good live and went down well with the new COF fans juding by the screams as did the next track, 'Mannequin', which I myself have never been a big fan of but it sounded ok I suppose. Next came the incredible 'The Black Goddess Rises' one of the highlights that most of the crowd did not even recognise as they probably class old COF albums as Midian and Bitter... After that came the awesome 'A Gothic Romance' followed by 'Her Ghost In the Fog' and then 'Nymphetamine' which all the new fans went mad for. Next came the only song that the sound didn't sound quite as good on, 'Tortured Soul Assylum', where the guitars seemed a bit low in the mix, however this was not a problem on 'The Forest Whispers My Name' which followed and was also stunning although I believe should have had 'Ebony...' before it.
Interlude
'The Promise of Fever' followed which as always was great live, so brutal, followed by one of the other standout tracks of the night, 'Thirteen Autumns and a Widow'. Next came 'Mother of Abominations' with that awesome ending riff in which the large 12ft(?) death-like puppet made an appearance. Finally they played 'From the Cradle to Enslave' to finish complete with the angle-grinders throwing out sparks.
After the show we then walked up to Subway for a drink and wandered about aimlessly until happening on James standing outside what happened to be the back entrance to the venue, where he interstingly told me that my Darkthrone top (the Transilvanian hunger one) had been designed by none other than Dave! Shortly after we also experienced the strange dog fetish that Martin seems to have as he launched himself at one without a thought.
overall it was a great gig, shame about the lack of fans of the earlier stuff though. Next time they should play 'Desire in Violent Overture' and 'Funeral In Carpathia' in my opinion.
And I forgot to mention they were some god damn nice guitars on stage. Paul's bat guitar *trys to hold in cum* and James' awesome custom Ibanez complete with really cool inlays *cums*
